Synopsis:
Treating the permanent dentition in pediatric patients can be very challenging due to the incomplete formation of the apices. Unsuccessful treatment can lead to premature loss of the permanent tooth. This presentation will start with a thorough discussion of diagnosis and the various spectrum of pulpal therapeutic treatments based on immature/mature apex. Through case presentations, several techniques for treating the immature apex will be demonstrated, including apexogenesis, apexification and regenerative treatments. The clinical use of various materials such as mineral trioxide aggregate and bioceramics will be discussed. Furthermore, techniques for treating the mature apex will be reviewed, including conventional therapy and extraction. Finally, the future of endodontics in vital pulp therapy will be presented.

Upon successful completion of this lecture, participants will be able to:

  • Diagnose and treatment plan teeth with open and closed apices.
  • Know when and how to perform different procedures on open apices.
  • Know when and how to perform different procedures on closed apices.
  • Know when and how to perform regeneration procedures.
