Synopsis:
The potential loss of a dental implant due to complications is a prominent focus of continuing education programs today. A prevalent contributor to this is peri-implantitis—an inflammatory disease posing a threat to the longevity of dental implants and the prostheses that they help to support. Central questions include: the optimal approach to addressing this issue, determining the point at which a dental implant is considered hopeless, and the procedures involved to replace it.

This lecture aims to illuminate the latest information about the potential causes of peri-implant complications, exploring both strategies and emerging technologies for effective disease resolution. A significant emphasis will be placed on collaborative approaches, engaging both the restorative dentist and the periodontist/surgeon. The overarching goal is to achieve the best possible results aligned with our patients’ objectives.

Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Discuss a recent classification given for peri-implantitis and how this helps into factoring into prognosis and treatment efforts.
  • Discuss the benefits of resective and regenerative approaches to maintaining failing dental implants.
  • List what advances, i.e., cone beam technology and regenerative materials, are enhancing diagnostic and treatment efforts.

The Second District Dental Society (SDDS) and New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) has been closely monitoring the ongoing public discourse surrounding Int. No. 1379, a bill that proposes removing fluoride from New York City’s municipal drinking water and dismantling one of the most significant public health achievements of the past century.
