Synopsis:

Understanding medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and its management is crucial in the daily practice of dentistry. Patients taking antiresorptive and/or antiangiogenic drugs are at risk of developing this rare but potentially debilitating condition of the jaw. In this presentation, we will be discussing the indication and mechanism of these drugs in order to understand the pathogenesis, prevention and management of MRONJ. Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Define MRONJ.
  • Identify the drugs that place patients at risk of developing MRONJ.
  • Understanding the indication and mechanism of these drugs.
  • Educate these patients as to the importance of routine follow-up with their general dentists in order to promote and maintain good oral health as a strategy for prevention.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of MRONJ that would require referral to an oral and maxillofacial surgery for additional workup and management.
  • Know the stages and treatment options available to manage MRONJ once it has developed.
