Featured Clinician:
Mana Saraghi, D.M.D.
Associate Professor of Dentistry, Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Synopsis:
Acute post-surgical dental pain is one of the most common clinical challenges in dentistry, yet prescribing practices remain highly variable and often inconsistent with current evidence. This two-hour lecture provides a practical, evidence-based update on postoperative analgesia with a focus on effective, opioid-sparing strategies. We will review the nociceptive pain pathways most relevant to dental surgery and examine the principles of multimodal analgesia, emphasizing how targeted regimens can intercept pain at multiple points along the nociceptive pathway to maximize efficacy and minimize adverse effects. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications and side-effect profiles of key analgesic classes, including acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, long-acting local anesthetics and opioids.

This session is designed to translate pharmacologic science into practical chairside decision-making, equipping clinicians with evidence-based tools to deliver predictable postoperative pain control while reducing reliance on opioid medications. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the pain pathways as they relate to acute post-surgical dental pain.
  2. Define multimodal analgesia.
  3. Explain the mechanism of action, indications, contraindications and adverse drug reactions for the following medications or drug classes: acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory mediators, corticosteroids, long-acting local anesthetics and opioids.
