Synopsis:
This presentation will examine six key protocols that represent both classical foundations and ongoing controversies in prosthetic and implant dentistry. Topics to be reviewed include: 

• Implant-assisted removable overdentures
• Connecting natural teeth to dental implants
• Unilateral cantilever off of dental implants
• Extracting teeth in the era of implant dentistry
• The semi-precision removable partial denture
• The dental implant or the retained tooth

 Each topic will be approached from a practical, evidence-based perspective emphasizing biomechanical principles, material selection and treatment planning rationale. The goal is to integrate sound prosthodontic reasoning with contemporary implant concepts while maintaining respect for biological and functional limits. Through clinical case reviews, literature summaries and procedural illustrations, participants will review the factors that guide restorative choice, longevity and patient-centered outcomes. Emphasis will be placed on critical evaluation of conventional versus implant-assisted options, “optimal” versus alternate treatment plans and decision-making in various restorative scenarios. Attendees will leave with a structured framework for analyzing diverse treatment possibilities and selecting approaches that achieve meaningful clinical outcomes with realistic parameters of risk, cost and patient preference. Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will be able to: 

• Analyze the bio-mechanical and biological principles that influence treatment planning across classical and implant-based restorative options.
• Compare and contrast conventional, semi-precision and implant-assisted prosthetic designs relative to longevity, maintenance and patient satisfaction.
• Evaluate evidence supporting various restorative connections—including tooth-to-implant and cantilever configurations—within clinical and risk management frameworks.
• Formulate patient-specific treatment plans that balance esthetics, function, cost and biologic preservation while pursuing “optimal” outcomes.
• Apply a structured, evidence-based decision process when determining whether to retain or extract teeth in prosthetic rehabilitation cases.

Participants will also be able to critically evaluate available options and make treatment-planning decisions that integrate sound evidence, clinical judgement and practical alternatives to achieve patient-centered outcomes.

JOHN S. CAVALLARO, JR., D.D.S. was a clinical professor at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine from 2009 to 2019 and a clinical associate professor at New York University College of Dentistry from 1986 to 2019. He taught both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral residents the restorative and surgical aspects of prosthetic/implant dentistry, as well as classical literature review. Simultaneously, he maintained a full-time private practice of surgical implant dentistry and prosthodontics in Brooklyn, New York, and for a short time placed dental implants for a private practice in New York City. He was a member of the American College of Prosthodontists, the Academy of Osseointegration and a fellow of the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontists.

Dr. Cavallaro authored and co-authored approximately 50 peer-reviewed articles addressing various aspects of implant dentistry. From 2011 to 2019, he was a lecturer and key opinion leader for Implant Direct, LLC and had the opportunity to speak in many states across the U.S., as well as perform two studies that resulted in one domestic and one international research paper on dental implants. In 1999, Dr. Cavallaro was the president of Second District Dental Society. Importantly, he is husband to Dr. Anna Marie Truncali and father to three great adult children. Finally, Dr. Cavallaro, aka “DocSamurai,” is an eighth-degree black belt and has practiced taekwondo for 50 years.
