Synopsis:
Have you ever had patients who do everything they are told and still have gum disease, caries and pain? The oral cavity can breed a host of problems and not all of them are simply due to poor oral hygiene and diet. Issues such as phantom tooth pain, random breakage and loss of enamel are common ailments in everyday practice. When we simply look at one tooth at a time, we can only fix acute issues as they present themselves. When we take a step back and really ask why these issues might be happening, we can create comprehensive, longer lasting results.

This lecture will explore basic dysfunctions in sleep, breathing and swallowing patterns and present diagnostic and treatment options. You will learn how these functional problems can manifest in the oral cavity and how to help improve outcomes. Upon successful completion of this lecture, attendees will learn how to screen for sleep, breathing and swallowing problems; when and how to make appropriate referrals; and simple treatments that can be applied to general dentistry practice. Participants will also be able to identify functional problems such as sleep apnea, breathing and swallowing pattern that can manifest themselves in the oral cavity.
