Synopsis:
This course will be divided into six segments, each of roughly one hour duration:
- Pain Science and Gross Anatomy: Topics will include the specialty of orofacial pain, pain processing and the musculoskeletal anatomy of the masticatory system. This serves as a necessary foundation for all the following topics.
- Temporomandibular Disorder Diagnosis: Using the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD) as a basic guideline, discussion will cover masticatory muscle and temporomandibular joint disorders. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for successful management of these conditions.
- TMD Management 1 (Self-Care): There is general agreement within the orofacial pain community that initial management of nearly all TMDs should be conservative and reversible. Implementation of a logical self-care program is vital for optimal pain outcomes and is foundational to all other possible treatment modalities.
- TMD Management 2 (Oral Appliances and Medications): Oral appliance therapy is an extremely common treatment modality offered to patients suffering from TMDs. Potential mechanisms of action, indications for use and practical tips for improved outcomes will be discussed. In many cases, addition of medications, either as a short-term bridge or as a longer-term management strategy, is necessary to optimize pain outcomes. Practical pharmacotherapy will be discussed.
- The Mystery Toothache: Most cases of "toothache" do, in fact, arise from the pulpal or periodontal structures of the tooth. Appropriately directed dental interventions will almost always resolve these cases. However, patients will sometimes report "toothache" even though no dental culprit can be identified, leading to a potentially frustrating situation for patient and dentist alike. The differential diagnosis of non-odontogenic "toothache" will be explored.
- Case Studies: Several patient cases will be presented.
Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will:
- Understand the musculoskeletal anatomy of the masticatory system.
- Learn to diagnose and conservatively manage temporomandibular disorders.
- Be exposed to the differential diagnosis and management of other non-odontogenic orofacial pains, such as neurovascular and neuropathic pain disorders.

A full refund, less a ten dollar ($10.00) administrative charge, or if requested and available, credit for a similarly priced course will be issued.
