Synopsis:

This lecture will review the current materials available for ceramic restorations including zirconia, lithium silicates, glass ceramics and ceramic/glass hybrids. We will review the properties as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the various materials. This will aid the clinician in choosing the correct material for various clinical situations.

An advantage of ceramic restorations is the ability to bond them to tooth structure. This allows for a more conservative tooth preparation. However, cement selection and technique is critical to success and one material and procedure will be presented that can be used with slight variation on all ceramic restorations. Upon successful completion of this lecture, attendees will have an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the various ceramic materials currently available. This will aid in selecting the right material for different clinical situations. There will also be a brief review of cementation of ceramic restorations.
