Synopsis:
Am I treating the right tooth? Is there a radiolucency on this radiograph? Should I take a CBCT for this case? Should I refer this case to an endodontist? What is the prognosis of this tooth? This seminar will be helpful if you have ever asked yourself these questions and more. In the first half, we will review the importance of a correct and accurate endodontic diagnosis. We will focus first on the patient interview by reviewing examples and audience participation. A brief explanation of non-odontogenic pain and how to rule it out will be provided. Then, we will describe the clinical assessment tools and how to interpret their results. Finally, we will discuss the importance of radiographic interpretation in endodontics to avoid surprises. The indication and limitation of CBCT images in endodontic diagnosis will be discussed.

In the second half, we will work towards building confidence in clinical judgment while recognizing one's limits. We will provide a checklist the practitioner could use to select the best available treatment. Some specific examples will be discussed with the participants. We will review the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) Case Difficulty Assessment Form and its applications in your practice. We will discuss the cost of root and how you could more effectively manage risk, efficiency, and cost by referring to a specialist. Join us for a lecture focused on diagnosis and treatment planning in endodontics. Upon successful completion of this course, the attendee will be able to:

  • Know and understand how to achieve an accurate endodontic diagnosis
  • Understand and use the AAE-recommended diagnostic terminology for describing pulpal and periapical disease
  • Recognize and evaluate the difficulty of a case
  • Recognize one's limitations
  • Know when and how to refer
  • Effectively interview the patient and collect useful information
  • Understand the concept behind sensibility testing
  • Use and interpret the sensibility testing
  • Discuss endodontic prognosis
