Synopsis:
Forensic dentists worldwide have been taught that because each human dentition is unique then the marks (bitemarks) left by those dentitions would also be unique. As such, forensic dentists are taught how to analyze bitemarks on skin to establish the identity of the biter and they have also served as expert witnesses, aiding law enforcment in the pursuit of criminal investigations. We will discuss the traditional methods of analysis as it has been and continues to be taught. We will also review ALL of the published research on the fidelity of skin as a registration material and further discuss the role played by forensic odontologists in the criminal justice system.

Upon successful completion of this lecture, attendees will learn the scientific research which supports the analysis of bitemarks as endorsed by the American Board of Forensic Odontology.
