Synopsis:
Traditionally, dental education has not devoted much clinical and/or didactic time to training students in the treatment of patients with developmental and/or physical disabilities. As a result, many practitioners do not feel prepared to treat this challenging (and growing) population. This presentation will show you how treating this population can be both emotionally and financially rewarding. The social context of developmental disabilities in America will be discussed and an overview of the current barriers to care will be presented. A review of the major disabilities will be included in the course, along with treatment tips and "tricks of the trade."
Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will be able to:
- List the main types of developmental disabilities (DD)
- Explain barriers to care for people with DD
- Apply treatment modalities to increase the number of patients treated in practice
- Describe what is meant by modification and/or adaptation of treatment plans for patients with DD
