Synopsis:
This is an overview of head and neck oncologic surgical practice for the general practitioner and its aim is to outline epidemiology of head and neck cancers, as well as to differentiate between subtypes within the head and neck and how the diagnoses, implications and management are different. As the prognosis is dependent on early diagnosis, there will be emphasis on the importance of the general dentists’ involvement in screening.
Staging will be reviewed, as this is paramount in diagnostic aspect of care. There will be a brief overview of the management of oral cancer with National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines. Case presentations, including post ablative reconstruction techniques and dental rehabilitation of the oral oncologic patients, will be presented.
